RSSRadio has a long history of multiple presence in the App Store®, in the beginning RSSRadio was a paid for app and when the free version came along it sat happily beside the paid version on the store for many years.
With Apples massive changes to iOS7 I took the decision last year to write a new app for iOS7, this was definitely a double edged sword.
- For the positive I was able to try new user interface elements and new ways of doing things whilst those users who were more conservative towards change were able to keep the old RSSRadio and remain unaffected. There is no doubt that RSSRadio could never be as good as it is in iOS7 if i'd had to just iterate from where the old RSSRadio was. RSSRadio7 is a cleaner app, with better code and is a great foundation for the future.
- For the negative many users resented the $0.99 upgrade fee i initially tried to charge, and even once i dropped that charge the process of migrating data over to a new app was cumbersome and error prone. Due to a large advantage in historical downloads searches bring up the old RSSRadio before the iOS7 edition so many people still end up running the old version.
I can no longer update RSSRadio classic as Apples rules now require all updates to be iOS7 styled, I have thought long and hard about what I should do:
- Leave RSSRadio classic on the App Store® to wither and die
- Remove RSSRadio classic from the App Store®
- Replace RSSRadio classic with RSSRadio7
There isn't a solution here that will suit everybody's needs, some people would just like to be left on RSSRadio classic, many would like the new app but don't know it exists or can't successfully migrate their data, and it would be easier for me to make enough money to feed my family if when people search the App Store® they find my best up to date app not some old version.
So, here is the plan. I am going to replace RSSRadio Classic (the free edition that you see on the store) with RSSRadio7.
- If you are not running iOS7 you will not be affected, you won't be offered the upgrade and if you restore your device RSSRadio Classic will be restored for you.
- If you are already running RSSRadio7 you will not be affected, updates will come just as they always have.
- If you are running RSSRadio Classic and you have RSSRadio7 you will receive RSSRadio7 as an upgrade within a week, you can choose not to accept this upgrade if you have auto updates OFF. If you do upgrade all your settings and data are preserved and you will be prompted to read the tips FAQ to get your bearings.
- If you are running the old "RSSRadio Premium", you are not affected by this.
I'm aware that some people will get upgraded when they didn't want to, although i'm sure many of these people will be happier in the long run I can expect some negative reviews. For those that do accidentally get upgraded please contact me as I do have a way of distributing a limited number of copies of RSSRadio classic.
